IU debut pada tanggal 24 September 2008 dengan mengeluarkan mini album dengan judul,
Lost and Found, dan IU menerima banyak pujian karena karakter suaranya iang kuat….
Pada tanggal 16 April 2009, IU kembali dengan album pertama “Growing Up”, dengan judul lagu “Boo” dan Dalam waktu tiga minggu, “Boo” mendapatkan pergi ke # 1 untuk SBS Inkigayo, dan popularitasnya pun juga naik bersama-sama dengan artis terkenal lainnya seperti SG Wannabe dan Younha. Lagu ini juga berhasil di KBS Mubank K-Chart, di Mnet M!Countdown dan berbagai chart musik online.
IU sering menyanyikan lagu penyanyi lain dengan gitar nya, misalnya dari SHINee “Juliette”, Big Bang “Lies”, Super Junior “Sorry Sorry” dan Girls’ Generasi “Gee”. Baru-baru ini, IU dinyanyikan judul lagu “Araro” untuk drama MBC terkenal,
Queen Seon Duk, Dia juga ditampilkan di album Mighty Mouth’
Love Class in the song “희망사항.”
IU juga duet dengan Seulong 2AM untuk lagu mereka “잔소리” (Nagging). Lagu ini juga disebut sebagai “사랑 우리 하게 됐어요 2″ (We Fell In Love 2). Lagu ini diciptakan untuk acara We Got Married. Pada tanggal 1 Juni 2010, teaser untuk video musik rilis dan Pada tanggal 27 Juni 2010, IU memenangkan penghargaan pertamanya sejak memulai debutnya di SBS Inkigayo untuk “Nagging.” Pada tanggal 2 Juli 2010, dia memenangkan penghargaan lain untuk itu lagu di KBS Music Bank K-Chart. Tidak lama setelah dia menang di acara musik, IU dipilih untuk menyanyikan lagu OST utama untuk drama MBC Road No.1 dengan judul “여자라서” (Because I’m A Woman) yang mendapatkan sambutan baik di Chart musik
Pada bulan Agustus 2009, IU MC program baru Gom Music Chart di GomTV, sebuah acara mingguan, di mana netizens Korea Selatan mendapatkan memilih lagu favorit mereka.IU juga nebjdai tamu tetap di Super Junior Kiss Radio dan Maybee’s Volume Angkat. dan pada tanggal 19 Oktober 2009 IU juga akan menjadi tamu tetap pada Chin Chin Radio (dgn DJ Taeyeon) dan Starry Night-host oleh Park Kyung Lim dan Shin Young di MBC.
IU bersama dengan Key SHINee berkolaborasi, dalam lagu “Love Letter For You (Noyegae Shineun Pyeonji)” Saat Taeyeon Girls’ Generasi akan meninggalkan MBC Radio FM4U 91.9Mhz’ Chin Chin Radio ‘, IU dipilih sebagai DJ sementara selama dua minggu bersama dengan BEAST Doojoon. IU juga akan ambil bagian dalam berbagai acara baru di SBS disebut HEROES. IU adalah salah satu dari 12 anggota perempuan yang dipilih oleh SBS untuk membawakan acara variety show baru ini. IU menyanyikan duet dengan Sung Shi Kyung berjudul “It’s You.”
